Community based Disaster
Management activities |
GMSL implemented Community based
Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM)
Programs in 2 villages, namely
Diggoda and Kovilagoda of the
Palindanuwara DS division in
2013. For the preparation of the
CBDRM plans GMSL conducted a
series of workshops with the
participation of diverse aged
communities with diverse
economic and social backgrounds.
Notably, majority of the
participants were women and they
took the leading role in
preparing the plan. GMSL went on
to develop the plan step by step
as it requires patience to
sensitize communities in the
technical aspects of disaster
management. After preparing the
plans, GMSL formed two societies
for the implementation and
monitoring of the disaster
management activities at local
level. In addition, GMSL
provided much needed equipment
to the community such as canoes,
steel tents, cooking equipment,
and life jackets. The program
was quite successful and the
communities effectively managed
flood impact during the flood
happened in June 2014 with the
knowledge, skills and resources
given to them by GMSL.
